Capital Community College, Hartford CT
- Capital Community College recently graduated its 52nd cohort of Paramedic program students at a ceremony held at the college. Over 100 family and friends, along with faculty, staff and community partners, were on-hand to applaud the students' accomplishments. Among the graduates was Jessica Casey of Ellington.
Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT
- Eastern students recently participated in the the Center for Early Childhood Education's (CECE) annual TIMPANI toy study - Toys that Inspire Mindful Play and Nurture Imagination. The CECE announced on Dec. 9 that "Family Counters" by Learning Resources is the 2019 TIMPANI Toy. Assisting with the 2019 study was Eastern graduate student Sayantani Nandy of Ellington, who is studying early childhood education. According to Nandy, "From this study I have learnt that toys could be one of the most fundamental and effective tool in a child's overall development, more prominent in a child's cognitive and social processes." For the past 10 years, the annual study has investigated how young children learn as they play with a variety of toys in natural settings. This year, researchers studied 10 toys representing different types of play materials. The toys were placed in preschool classrooms at Eastern's Child and Family Development Resource Center, and student researchers used hidden cameras to videotape children playing with the toys. Researchers then coded the footage according to the study's evaluation rubric, which assesses how well each toy inspires children's problem-solving, cooperation with peers, creativity and use of language. Nandy observed that children role-played with the toy, pretending the figures were "parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, pets. It so much relates to their family surroundings and what they see in their homes and environment."
