UND lands first goalie recruit since Karl Goehring's return to campus - Grand Forks Herald

The former UND record-setting netminder, who has been coaching goalies since he retired from playing in 2009, returned to campus this summer to be a full-time assistant coach.

While his responsibilities go far beyond coaching and scouting goalies, there still is that aspect.

And for the first time since Goehring returned, UND has landed a Goehring-scouted goalie recruit.

Hobie Hedquist, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound, 2003-born netminder from Heron Lake, Minn., recently gave a verbal commitment to play college hockey at UND.

"There wasn't anything I didn't like about UND," Hedquist said. "I really got along with the coaching staff. I liked everything they told me. I liked the culture and history of the program. I liked everything that happened on my visit and felt like it was the best fit for me."

Hedquist plays for the Sioux Falls Power U16 program, where his head coach, Noelle Needham, says he's a high-end prospect.

"He's a really athletic kid who has a high IQ," said Needham, who also serves as a scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs. "His skating has improved tremendously. I think that's only going to continue to get better. I think that's going to be an elite area. He's confident in respect to playing the puck. He's able to make plays with the puck because of his IQ. He's a big, strong kid. He's a farm kid with really good work ethic.

"I think he is a legit NHL prospect. And the opportunity to work with Karl, I would say is a big deal for any goalie."

Hedquist joins Grand Forks native Kaleb Johnson as UND's two goalie commits. It is still up in the air when they will come to campus.

UND needed to pick up another goalie recruit after it parted ways with previous commit Cameron Rowe, who is now committed to Wisconsin.

Hedquist previously committed to Colorado College a week after his 15th birthday, but opted to re-open his recruiting.

"I committed when I was such a young age," Hedquist said. "I was just able to re-open my recruiting and I'm blessed UND gave me an offer. I also want to thank Colorado College for the opportunity they gave me, but I felt it was best if I would re-open my recruiting."

Hedquist has been playing at the U16 level for the last three seasons, which is abnormal.

"I committed to him playing 16s at such a young age, because we believed what he can be," Needham said. "He came to Tier I from Bantam AA. It was a huge jump. He really got thrown in the deep end with this. He has had to persevere and develop through some adversity of getting lit up when he was younger."

Hedquist said he visited UND during the Miami University series in November. UND swept the RedHawks that weekend.

But it wasn't just what he saw on the ice that sold him. Hedquist also became excited at the prospect of working with Goehring.

"Having a full-time goalie coach is something that I think is tremendous," Hedquist said. "The coaching staff really told me about all of the benefits of having a full-time goalie coach and everything it's done this year. Working with Karl is going to be a tremendous asset."

Needham agreed that it will be a good fit.

"I just think his work ethic and quest to be a top goalie, to be an NHL goalie, fits really well with the philosophy and mentality of University of North Dakota hockey," Needham said.
