Weekly attendance at the Church of the Highlands now exceeds more than 50,000 at all its campuses combined, according to its latest year-end annual report.
Alabama’s largest church is headquartered on Grants Mill Road in Irondale but founding Pastor Chris Hodges has his weekly sermons streamed by video to branches from Huntsville to Mobile and Tuscaloosa to Columbus, Ga.
Weekly attendance at all 21 branch locations combined is 52,163, according to the church’s latest annual report.
The Church of the Highlands will open its Fultondale campus on Sunday, Dec. 15, just in time to help host some of a series of 100 Christmas services that begin next week at all branch campuses, beginning Dec. 20 and continuing through Dec. 24. The first services in the new building Sunday begin at 8 a.m., 9:45 and 11:30 a.m.
The Fultondale campus features a 1,500-seat sanctuary and will host a congregation that has grown to weekly attendance of 2,012 in its temporary location, according to the annual report.
The 1,513-seat sanctuary that opened in Huntsville in July now has weekly attendance of 4,460, the report said.
A 1,150-seat sanctuary and a new campus in Gadsden is under construction and set for completion in December 2020. The congregation meets in a school auditorium now and has 1,897 weekly attendance.
The church opened its first out-of-state branch Aug. 11 in Columbus, Ga., and opened its second branch campus in Auburn on Aug. 25. It opened a Sylacauga branch on April 7.
The Church of the Highlands encourages members to join small groups, and reports that 53,727 people took part in 5,411 small groups during 2019.
“I personally believe the local church is the hope of the world,” Hodges said this week. “Right now in America, 4,000 churches a year are closing their doors.”
The Association of Related Churches, which Hodges helped launch and which is supported by the Church of the Highlands, started 65 new churches in 2019 and has started 874 new churches over the past two decades.
