Campus watch: Rohrwasser earns Special Teams award - Times Union

Justin Rohrwasser earned a pair of honors this week for his performance as a placekicker with the Marshall football team.

Rohrwasser, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound redshirt senior from Clifton Park and a Catholic Central High graduate, was named Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Year and earned a spot on the league’s first team. It was the first time since 2005 that a kicker earned the Special Teams honor.

Rohrwasser led the Thundering Herd in scoring with 84 points. He connected on 17 of 20 field goals, including a career-high kick of 53 yards. He was the team’s kickoff specialist as well and averaged 60.4 yards on 57 kicks with 29 touchbacks.

Marshall finished the regular season with an 8-5 record and will take on Central Florida in the Gasparilla Bowl on Monday in Tampa, Fla. The game is set for 2:30 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN.

Selena Lott (Troy)

The junior was named to the Big East Conference honor roll for the third time this season on Dec. 2 after leading the 7-2 Marquette women’s basketball team to a 2-1 record the previous week. She was also named MVP of the St. Mary’s Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 29-30 in Moraga, Calif. The Columbia High graduate averaged 14.0 points, 4.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.7 steals in the three games. She leads the Golden Eagles in scoring (15.9), assists (43) and steals (17).

Boo Buie (Albany)

The 6-2 freshman, a graduate of Gould Academy (Maine), is coming off the bench for the 4-4 Northwestern men’s basketball team. Buie is averaging just 7.5 points a game but had a season-high 20 points in 24 minutes of action and was 8-for-9 from the field in an 82-64 victory over Boston College on Dec. 3.  And, he had 16 points in a 72-59 loss to Pittsburgh on Nov. 27.

Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake)

The 5-10 senior guard scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Dickinson women’s basketball team to a 77-62 victory over Susquehanna on Dec. 11. The Albany Academy for Girls graduate connected on five 3-pointers and was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Padalino is averaging 13.0 points and 7.5 rebounds a game for the 3-5 Red Devils. She has connected on 18 of 45 3-point attempts (40 percent).

Gillian Burch (Ravena)

The freshman won two events, but it wasn’t enough as the Army women’s swim team dropped a 221-79 decision to rival Navy in a Patriot League meet last Thursday in Annapolis, Md. The Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk graduate finished first in the 100 breaststroke in 1 minute, 2.6 seconds and the 200 breaststroke in 2:14.93. Both times are Plebe records.

Zach Lawrence (Delanson)

The true freshman, a Duanesburg High graduate, has a 7-2 record and is 3-0 in dual meets with three pins competing at 165 pounds for the Springfield wrestling team. The Pride is 4-0 in dual meets this season. Junior Tyson Jones of Albany (Albany High) has a 6-4 record, 1-0 in dual matches, with two pins at 285 pounds.

Ashley Zachgo (Clifton Park)

The freshman had a big meet to help the Cortland women’s swim team capture the seven-team Snow Flake Invitational on Dec. 7 in Cortland. The Shenendehowa High graduate finished first in the 1-meter dive (252.70) and second in the 3-meter dive (256.30). Both were for six dives. The competitors exhibited the full 11-dive format and Zachgo had a 1-meter score of 395.70, which qualified her for regionals, and a 3-meter total of 407.33, three points short of reaching the qualifying standard.
