Florida middle schoolers accused of bringing guns to campus - Houston Chronicle

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (AP) — Two Florida middle school students are accused of bringing an unloaded handgun and BB gun to campus on the first day back from winter break, an official for the North Miami district said.

A Miami-Dade County Public Schools principal saw the Benjamin Franklin K-8 Center students at a park next door to the school rummaging through their backpacks on Monday, spokeswoman Jackie Calzadilla told news outlets. Hallman asked police on campus to search the two students before class started, she said.

The first student was found with the unloaded handgun. The second student tried to stash the unloaded BB gun somewhere on campus before being caught, Calzadilla confirmed. Miami-Dade Schools police arrested the two and charged them with felonies. The exact charges weren't given.

Calzadilla said the students haven't returned to school but will face disciplinary actions. The district didn't identify the students or give their ages.
