Confederate statue on Ole Miss campus: What's next? - Clarion Ledger

Ole Miss Chancellor Glenn Boyce will seek approval from the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning to relocate the Confederate statue on the university's campus.

Friday, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History unanimously approved to move the statue from its current location near the university's administration building to the cemetery located on campus. The statue was erected in 1906, over 40 years after the end of the Civil War.

Friday afternoon, in an email to students and faculty, Boyce said, "with MDAH approval in hand, we will move forward."

According to the email, "MDAH approval was required before the request could be submitted to IHL."

The Daily Journal previously reported that IHL would take up the matter at its  December meeting. Friday afternoon, IHL sent out an emailed press release saying, at the time the release was issued, Boyce had yet to ask the matter be put on IHL's agenda. Boyce was appointed as chancellor in October.

"To date, the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning has not been presented with a request from the Chancellor to relocate the Confederate monument located on the University of Mississippi campus. The Chancellor of the university determines the items concerning UM that will be submitted to the Board for consideration."

In fact, the email stated, the board does not have a December meeting scheduled. Its next meeting is in January.

History of the proposal to relocate Confederate statue

In February, the Associated Student Body Senate for inclusion and cross-cultural engagement passed a resolution saying, "Confederate ideology directly violates the tenets of the university creed that supports fairness, civility, and respect for the dignity of each person."

Less than a week later, the resolution unanimously passed.

In an email to students in August, then-Ole Miss Interim Chancellor Larry Sparks said, "We are following the steps necessary for successful relocation and will maintain steady and committed progress to accomplish this relocation. I reiterate that this will place the monument in a more suitable location, one that is commensurate with the purpose that is etched on its side."
