UND campus construction progresses through winter months - Grand Forks Herald

Construction is progressing on the new steam plant being built on campus. Once completed, the new natural gas facility will replace the university’s old coal-powered plant that sits in the middle of campus. Crews were able to start construction on the site a little earlier in the spring, which is “really paying dividends,” Larson said.

Work is being done on the interior of the building, including mechanical, electrical and other interior work.

Larson said the plant could be operational in late spring or early summer this year. Once the steam plant is fully operational, demolition of the old plant will begin, likely sometime this summer or fall.

“It's a big improvement over the aesthetics of the large stacks and the dirty coal pile,” Larson said. “It’s such a huge win for the campus.”

Part of the renovations being done at the the Chester-Fritz Library also are completed. The east side of the third floor of the library opened in mid-December. That portion of the renovation included the addition of seven new study rooms, but more work is to be done. Larson said crews will complete work on the sprinkler system, along with other mechanical and electrical updates, in the remainder of the building in early 2020. The north entrance may be completed by late February or early March.

“It's an occupied building, so you have to work where you can and then move people around and then work in that area,” he said. “It’s gone very well.”

Cold weather has shut down exterior work on the newly named Gershman Engagement Center, so crews now are working on finishing the interior renovation and restoration of the former president’s home. Furniture installation and other move-in work could begin in the early part of the spring semester, Larson said. The building was raised slightly, so the basement of the building will be new.

Work will also continue along University Avenue in the spring as median landscaping starts up again. Traffic signals will be installed at Oxford Street and University Avenue as soon as they’re delivered, Larson said.

Construction on the new Memorial Union is also underway. Larson said concrete is being poured and stairwells and elevators shafts are being constructed. Structural steel could begin to be installed by Jan. 20.

“We had a lot of a lot of impacts with the rain and snow, but we're still holding our our current schedule,” Larson said.
